They need to get rid of the Best Song category - very little to do with the films and a giant waste of time on the show.

Oscars 2012: We can rebuild him — Time to give the Academy Awards a million-dollar makeover
In the interests of livening up — and speeding up — the awards broadcast, here are a few simple techniques for making the Oscars more enjoyable for everyone. I’d like to thank the Academy and remind them that the music they hear is playing for them.
No shorts, please; we’re feature filmmakers
Short films often get short shrift, although they do have their own festivals now. And this year Toronto and Vancouver filmgoers actually had a chance to see the nominated live-action and animated films. The fact remains, however, that most moviegoers know little about the short films and less about those who bear the unfortunate and misleading title of short-film makers. Documentary shorts, this applies to you, too.
More suggestions…

Are retold tales a new fad or the latest incarnation of a rich tradition?
Margot Livesey’s latest novel, The Flight of Gemma Hardy, tells the story of a young girl who goes to live with her aunt, uncle and cousins after the death of her parents. The uncle treats his niece like a daughter, but after his accidental death she is shunned by her remaining relatives. Eventually, she enrolls in a strict boarding school, and later, lands a job at a remote estate tutoring a young girl. She falls for the young girl’s brooding guardian, only to have a deep, dark secret threaten their relationship.
Sound familiar?
The Flight of Gemma Hardy is a retelling of Charlotte Brontë’s novel Jane Eyre. This is not a secret, but a selling point. Two of the blurbs that grace the back of an advance copy of the book mention Brontë’s classic, and Livesey isn’t shy about acknowledging her debt. ILLUSTRATIONS BY STEVE MURRAY

Extremely Bad Advice: Radio Fed Up
One of my co-workers has this strange and inappropriate love of Radiohead. This would be fine if he kept it to himself. But he can’t. And he won’t. He plays their music non-stop in his office and sends endless Radiohead updates via email. ‘Radiohead’s new video!’ ‘Radiohead’s new single!’ ‘Radiohead meets the Queen!’ I’ve told him how much I hate Radiohead but that only encourages him. What can I do to make my workspace a Radiohead-free zone?

Leonard Cohen: Portrait of the artist as an older man
Leonard Cohen is releasing his 12th album, Old Ideas, on Jan. 31. Born in Montreal, Cohen learned guitar and formed his first band while a student at McGill, but the musician has always been more than just an everyday rock star. He’s a prophet, a poet, a sex symbol, an observant Jew who practices Zen, a businessman who lost his fortune, a muse and, perhaps most importantly, a father. The Post’s Ben Kaplan assembled a panel to dissect the various parts of the 77-year-old icon. (Illustration by Steve Murray)

Mark Wahlberg apologizes for claiming he would have prevented 9/11 tragedy
“If I was on that plane with my kids, it wouldn’t have been down like it did. There would have been a lot of blood in that first-class cabin and then me saying ‘OK. we’re going to land somewhere safely, don’t worry.’” [Photo illustration by Steve Murray]

Extremely Bad Advice: We Built This City On Walks And Strolls
Before I get to the heart of the matter, a warning: Do not mess with gaggles of teens. Our modern teenager is more dangerous than teens of olde. The hormones that trigger their primal instincts toward awkward lovemaking and physical violence are in full force, but unlike ancient teens they now have combat training from digital video games and rap music and alt-country videos.
